Sci-Ed Fact: El Nino is a seasonal ocean current flowing south along the cost of northern peru; it peaks between January and March. The current is warm, nutrient-poor, and has low salinity. It travels a few degrees south of the equator before converging with the north-flowing Peru current. - BUT some years, a weakening of normally strong south-east trade winds allows the current to extend further south. Because of the changes in weather patterns brought on by El Nino, the current can precipitate several environmental disasters.
