ISDN Windows 95 Installation Guide

[Note that these instructions are for serial ISDN devices that respond to an AT command set.]

  1. Install the modem for you Terminal Adapter in Windows 95.
    1. Go to the control panel and double click on "Modems."
    2. Select the "Add" option.
    3. Check the box labeled "Don't detect my modem; I'll select it from a list." and then click "Next."
    4. Select, under "Manufacturers; "Standard modem Types)" and then select a "Standard 28800 bps Modem" from the list under "Models." Then click "Next."
    5. You'll then be prompted for a Comm port. Choose whatever Comm port your Terminal Adapter is on. Click "Next."
    6. Click "Finish."
    7. A new modem called a "Standard 28800 bps modem" should then be in your list of Modems. You can then click "Close"
    8. Configure Dial Up Networking for your ISDN connection

    9. Go into "My Computer" and Click on "Dial Up Netorking" (if you don't have "Dial Up Networking" installed, meaning the icon in question is not present, refer to Zipcall's online documentation for instructions on how to install it). Double click on the icon labeled "Make New Connection"
    10. Name the connection Whatever you'd like (in this case I named it "Whatever" just to be cute) and select the Standard 28800 bps Modem from the list of modems.
    11. Put the phone number (being sure to fill in the area code, it gets grumpy if you don't) and the country you are dialing from (it defaults to "United States of America (1)").
    12. Click "Finish."
    13. Go back to "Dial Up Networking" you "My Computer" and you should see a new icon, in this case named "Whatever." Single click on it with your right mouse button and a menu should appear. On that menu select "Properties,"

    14. Click on "Configure."
    15. Under the "General" tab select a "Maximum speed" of 115200 bps (note that you must have at least a 16550 UART chip for this speed. Most new computers will have this. If, however, your computer is more than a year and a half old you would be well advised to check this.). Then click the "Connection" tab.

    16. Click the "Advanced" button.
    17. In the "Extra Settings" box place the appropriate sting for your Terminal addapter to place a Multilink PPP call. For the 3com Impact or Netopia: s71=1s80=1

      For the Bitsurfer Pro: %A2=2@B0=2@M2=P

Click "OK" back to the main "Properties " screen (twice).

    18. Click "Server Type"
    19. Make sure "PPP, Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet" is selected. Also, the only box that should be checked is "TCP/IP." Click on "TCP/IP Settings."

Make sure "Server Assigned IP Addresses" is checked as well as "Specify Name Server Addresses." Then place the following IP addresses in the "Primary DNS" and "Seoncdary DNS" respectively:

      199.232.240.3
      199.232.240.4
Everything else can be left at default. Click "OK" out of "Properties" (three times).
    20. Double Click on the dialer icon with your left mouse button.
    21. Put in your username (hostname) and password as well as the 11 digit phone number (with ISDN you'll want to put in the full 11 digit phone number even for a local call in most cases).

Note that for the Bitsurfer Pro you must put the phone number in twice to place a Multilink PPP call in the following format:

      14082491433&14082491433
    22. The following three pictures just show what happens (or should, in any event) when you hit the "Connect" button. This process will take anywhere from 3 to 20 seconds depending upon the device and the server.

[Note that several of the serial devices, including the 3com Impact and Netopia TA's make bps requests per channel and so the connect rate will not read 115200 in those cases but rather 64000 or 56000 depending upon the capability of the line.]

      Thats it.
