Definitions for Domain Name Registration

Contact: The person responsible for a particular domain or aspects of a domain. There are four types of contacts: Administrative, Technical, Zone, and Billing. These contacts are listed in the InterNIC's WHOIS database. Communication with contacts is via the e-mail address listed in this database.
Domain Name: The operational name, used by TCP/IP applications, that identifies an organization connected to the Internet.
DNS: Domain Name System. It handles mapping from host names to Internet addresses.
New Domain Name: A name that have not yet been entered into the InterNIC Registration Services database, or a name that have expired and have been removed from the InterNIC database and made available for reisssue to an applicant at a later time.
Existing Domain Name: A name that is registered within the InterNIC Registration Services database.
Internet Service Provider (ISP): Commercial company that provides connectivity between the domain name holder and the Internet, and that assist with domain name registration.
Modify (Domain Name): The process in which any of the original information given for a domain name is changed. The term "modify" is also used by the InterNIC to describe the changing or transferring of DNS and/or ISP.
