My work and all these other activities don't leave me with much time to play with my home computer, but I'm a hacker at heart, so I do it anyway.

My operating system of choice is Linux, which has come a long way since I started using it at version 0.96. This free software is of better quality and greater utility than anything you can get from Microsoft. Besides, I refuse to infect my PC with the virus called "Windows 95" or any of its more recent incarnations. A few years ago, I had finally built an ELF system based on Linux 2.0.29 (I compiled everything except the compiler, C library, X, and Netscape), but of course by now that's obsolete and it is no longer even possible to download the precompiled C library by itself so I've given up and started using packaged distributions. They're not perfect, but they work. Of course, not everyone is a hacker like me, so it's good that these distributions exist and are being worked on and improved for the benefit of users who don't want to spend lots of time configuring their system in just a certain way.
