DECplus LogoDigital Receives Warm Welcome at PRIDE '97

On Saturday, 7 June, Digital Equipment Corporation's Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered social group, DECplus, participated in the annual Boston PRIDE parade and celebration. Over twenty employees, friends and supporters marched alongside Bruce Cramer's pride fla-ensconced powder-blue Volkswagen convertible to the acclaim and cheers of many observers en route.

For some, this was the first PRIDE in which they had participated. For others, PRIDE '97 represented the second year of a renewed presence by DIGITAL after a notable three-year absence.

Also important in the commemoration was DECplus's announcement to the world that the company had finally made a commitment to Domestic Partner benefits to both unmarried opposite-sex and same-sex couples. In testimonial to this offering, Carol and Shellie duBois rode along in the Volkswagen along with their sons, Evan and Justin. On either side of the car were posters painted by Pippa Jollie with Joel Goldstein's inspired words: "Domestic Partner Benefits, We Got 'Em!"

And in keeping with the theme, the group attached, to the car's bumper, tin cans and a sign which read, "Just Obtained. . ." as per Bruce's original suggestion.

The group also continued its tradition begun by Pippa, in last year's parade of blowing bubbles the length of the route. Many onlookers commented on the bubbles. So did the group behind us in the parade.

But fun was had by one and all.

Also participating this year were representatives from the Milford Area Alliance of Gay and Lesbian Youth (MAAGLY)--aka Chris and Wendy's "family". As one observer near Boston Common remarked, the MAAGLY bunch seemed the largest family group to participate in this year's parade. A member of Digital's contingent responded by saying, "All it takes is love to make a family."
