DECplus LogoSeptember 1995 DECplus Start-up Picnic

On September 16th, a picnic was supposed to have taken place to try and rebuild the g/l/b/t community within Digital. There were about 60 people who committed to going to the event. But as luck would have it, Mother Nature decided that was the day she would end the drought we were in the middle of. So the Heavens opened up and rain poured down. So the new date was on Sunday, September 24th. Coincidentally, it happened to be on the same day Lotus was having theirs. The day was cool, but bright and sunny. About 30 people showed up for the event. Everyone introduced themselves, but then the usual thing happened. The women talked mostly with the other women, and the men talked mostly with the other men. It wasn't until towards the end of the picnic that people started to talk in a group. This was certainly something that we needed to work on for the future events.

Overall, I would say the picnic itself turned out to be very good. New faces were seen, questions about coming out were asked, and concerns were raised about what we, as Digital employees could actually accomplish.

From the comments people had brought up, we were able to address some of them almost immediately. Pat Madden, one of the E-board members, was able to provide disk space on his machine for the re-opening of the Coming Out notesfile. All of the other concerns will be brought up for discussion at the next E-board meeting.
