OBJECTIVES:

• Describe the direction of centripetal acceleration and centripetal force.

• Give examples of a centripetal force. 

• Perform an experiment in which you use graphical analysis to study the relationship between centripetal force, velocity, and radius for an object moving in a circular path. 

• Use the mathematical definition of centripetal force and acceleration in problem solving. 

•  Write a qualitative and quantitative statement of Newton's law of universal gravitation. 

• Determine the force that one spherically symmetrical mass exerts on another. 

• Distinguish between 'g' and 'G' and explain how each is determined. 

• Compare the significance of an apple falling to the ground with the moon orbiting the earth. 

• Determine the strength of the gravitational field at a specified point outside a spherically symmetrical mass. 

• Describe the gravitational force inside and outside a uniform sphere, and calculate how the field at the surface depends on the radius and density of the sphere. 

• Recognize the connection between the motion of artificial satellites and circular motion around the earth. 

• Solve problems that relate the orbital velocity of a satellite to its distance from the earth. 

• State Kepler’s three laws of planetary motion and use them to describe in qualitative terms the motion of a body in an elliptical orbit. 

•  Apply conservation of angular momentum to determine the velocity and radial distance at any point in the orbit. 

•  Apply energy conservation in analyzing the motion of a body that is projected straight up from a planet’s surface or that is projected directly toward the planet from far above the surface.
