OBJECTIVES:
Describe the origin of the sound in various musical instruments.
State the type of wave that sound is and define compression and rarefaction.
Distinguish between audible sound, infrasonic sound, and ultrasonic sound.
Experimentally determine the speed of sound waves in air.
State the speed of sound in air at 0 deg C and compute its value at temperatures near normal room temperature.
Solve problems relating to the frequency, wavelength, and velocity of sound waves.
Determine the frequency and the peak voltage of a vibrating source by using an oscilloscope.
Differentiate between loudness and intensity.
State the scale used to measure intensity and describe it.
Calculate the relative intensities of two sounds using the above scale.
Explain what is meant by the Doppler Effect; calculate the frequency shift for an approaching or receding sound source.
Describe how the Doppler effect relates to the blue and red shifts for light.
Describe the conditions for a
sonic boom to be heard.
