TEXTBOOK: Chapter 15; Section 15.1 to 15.6; pages 484 - 503.
OBJECTIVES:
To state the three basic particles found in an atom, their location, and their charges.
To describe the make-up of both a positively charged object and a negatively charged object in terms of electrons.
To state, explain, and give one example of the law of conservation of charge.
To state the law of like charges and unlike charges.
Differentiate between electron action in conductors and insulators.
Explain why an automobile is a relatively safe haven in a lightning storm.
To describe how a neutral object may be charged by contact and by induction; and to identify the type of charge acquired in each case.
To use an electroscope to detect the presence of charge and identify the type of charge.
Describe how an insulator can be charged by charge polarization.
State the variables that affect the electric force between two objects; and to analyze how the variables affect the force.
State the name of the scientist who first quantified the nature of electric force and name the unit of electric charge.
Define the unit of electric charge in terms of the charge on an electron.
State and apply Coulomb's law for electrostatic charges for forces in one and two dimensions.
Define an electric field.
Sketch the electric field lines in the vicinity of simple charged objects.
Find the magnitude and the direction of the electric field for a test charge, and for a point charge or a combination of point charges.
State
the value of an electric field inside a conductor in which no current is
present.
