The house is of the Federal period. A bookbinding business was carried on in the ell which was later moved to 44 Whiting Street and is now the home of Carl Smith.
There is hand carving on the mantle in the living room. This carving was done by a ship's carpenter during the winter months in return for his board and lodging. The marble hearth in front of the fireplace is unusual and carries out the elegance of the Federal period. The doors have the double cross, denoting the Christian household.
