Medieval heresy
Medieval heresy originated in the far-reaching consequences of mystical
theology and practice, in unsanctioned claims of prophetic gifts, and in radical
imitation of apostolic goals for purity of life and spirit.
By refusing to acknowledge spiritual realities suggested by those who
claimed spiritual empowerment without the benefit or permission of Church
interpretation, the traditional body of the Church forced dissent from the Church and
the formation of so-called 'heretical' cults.
It is these "empowered" individuals who mark the history of religious
heresy. In creating new religious inspiration - new cults - the variant doctrine
or practices are less influential than the leaders who proclaim them.
