LAS VEGAS-Someone let Wayne Newton know that he can come out of hiding now, the skaters are gone. This years ASA World Championships invaded sin-city like a freight train and Roces Team Riders rode all over the competition.
The competition was the first event of any kind to be held at the all new All-Star Sports Park and the large crowds that came out saw some amazing skating in a truly unique setting throughout the four day event.
On the huge vert ramp inside the 2500-seat Boston Garden Experience arena, Aussie Cesar Mora's 1080s took center stage giving him the extra oomph he needed to wrestle the title away from countrymen Matt Salerno. Just like at the X-Games earlier this summer mere points separated the two at the end. Japanese Team Roces rider Takeshi Yasutoko made a strong run during the finals but fell just short of one of the precious spots on the podium. US team rider Andre Englehardt also had a strong showing. Hands down it was the most exciting vert contest of the season.
On the women's side of the slate, Ayumi Kawasaki grabbed another World Title from the grasp of her arch foe Fabiola Da Silva. Her win was the perfect revenge from her second place finish at the X-Games in San Diego earlier this year.
Men's X-Games Street champ Jonathan Bergeron entered the Levi's
Most Original Trick Contest with one goal - to win $10,000. A flat-spin
720 over a ten foot gap in the specially designed vert ramp proved the
keeper as the Bergenator grabbed his second $10G paycheck of the year.
Once again Roces riders proved they are the most creative and dominant
riders on the circuit. It will be years before other riders lands
1080's or 720 flat-spins, and when they do they'll remember that the originators
of these tricks were the best riders on the best skates, Cesar Mora and
Jonathan Bergeron and their Roces 5th Elements.

VENICE BEACH-The sun-drenched beaches and carnival atmosphere of Venice, California provided the perfect backdrop for the annual NiSS (National Inline Skate Series) Championships. The event was the culmination of a long, exciting year and several Roces riders made sure it was a year they would never forget.
How close was the men's street comp? Only one point separated Aussie Roces rider Blake Dennis from his first ever NiSS crown. The 15 year old skated a head-to-head battle with Sven Boekhorst and the two competitors flawless runs gave the judges fits. Blake will have his chance to get revenge on Sven at the ASA Championships next month in Las Vegas.
Roces riders dotted the Top 16 (9 of the top 16 finalists wore Roces 5th Elements). Last years street runner up Jonathan Bergeron (Canada) was on track to take the crown this year but fell near the end of his last run dashing his chances of grabbing gold. 1997 street champ Shane Saviers (Oregon) finished 5th after nearly knocking himself unconscious with a nasty fall in the quarterfinals. Frenchmen Thierry Lallemand finished 8th, Idahoan Erik Bailey and Aussie Toby Heslop tied for 12th and Franck Rodulfo (France) finished 16th.
14 year old Californian Jenny Curry put herself in position to win the first ever skating triple crown, having earlier this year won the X-Games Jenny won the street championship and positioned herself to take the title at the ASA Championships next month. Jenny once again proved she is skating at a different level from her competition by outdistancing her nearest competitor by 21 points. Teammate Ayumi Kawasaki (Japan) finished third wrapping up her first year competing in the street discipline after dominating NiSS and ASA vert comps for the past several years.
Ayumi just missed out on the top spot in the women's vert comp, falling just 3 points shy of eventual winner Fabiola da Silva. Swiss Roces rider Claudia Traschel snared a spot on the winners podium finishing third.
In the men's vert competition the Yasutoko brothers from Osaka, Japan battled tooth and nail for the bronze medal in the finals with younger brother Takeshi Yasutoko getting one up on his older sibling Eito Yasutoko. The two provided some of the most thrilling moments in the event and garnered most of the crowd support going in to the awards ceremony.
Roces riders grabbed the next three positions in the vert comp as well with Manuel Billiris (Australia) taking 5th, Distel Pipe (Switzerland) 6th and Shane Yost (Australia) finishing 7th. Cesar Mora (Australia) took 9th and Jonathan Bergeron 15th.
Aussie Shane Yost also was honored as the 1998 NiSS Vert Rookie of the Year. Yost, the bronze medalist at the 1997 Australian X Games, won the NiSS Venice comp three weeks ago after just missing out on winning the Seattle comp. The championships marked only his sixth contest as a pro and with a little more experience under his belt there is no telling what Shane will do next year.
From it's start back in April in Phoenix, Arizona the NiSS tour grinded it's way across the US in 1998 with stops in Dallas, Miami, Boston, Atlantic City, New York, New Orleans, Seattle and Venice bringing pro aggressive skating to thousands of fans. Full coverage of the NiSS Championships will air across the country on Fox Sports Net October 3rd.
