The JESUS film project
Dear friend in Christ, July 2, 1999
Do you believe God can transform murderers into His instruments of redemption and love? I certainly do! I have seen it with my own eyes.
The story presented here begins in a strange place, an eerie "museum of death," a high school-turned house of torture, in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
I was in Cambodia to meet the "JESUS" film teams. We were being hosted one afternoon by Samouen Taing, wife of Campus Crusade for Christ National Director for Cambodia, Vek Huong Taing.
"I should have been killed here," she sobbed. "I should have died in this place. It's only because of God's grace that I am alive. My sister-in-law and her five children were killed in this place!" Samoeun had never mustered the courage to visit this prison of torture, until now. Today, it serves as a national memorial to the estimated two million Cambodians who died in the "Killing Fields."
On the walls we saw strangely silent photos of hundreds of people, captured on film in their last moments. They looked gaunt, sad, and tormented. What had they done? What was their crime? It was because they wore glasses and were therefore part of the "educated class." Both were crimes that made you an "enemy of the state."
The horror of those days began when the victorious communist Khmer Rouge first marched into the capital and immediately ordered the entire population out. Vek Huong and Samoeun joined millions on forced death marches to the countryside, where they were told an "agrarian paradise" was to be formed. Moving with the huge and slowly moving crowds, Vek had to push their small car to conserve gas, while Samoeun sat in the passenger seat with their two-and-a-half-month-old baby. It took them 12 days to travel just 30 miles.
That same day when we visited the museum, we also walked through the infamous "Killing Fields." The ground beneath our feet was filled with human bone fragments and teeth. I stood in the spot where, when the soldiers ran out of bullets, they killed children by bashing their heads against a large tree. I saw the famous "monument of skulls" pagoda, filled with the remains of hundreds who had been slaughtered.
But, in the midst of these terrible atrocities, God miraculously intervened and saved Huong and Samoeum and their baby. Even when it appeared they would starve, God miraculously provided food. On their wedding anniversary, they "feasted" on the heads and skins of four rats--a "delicacy" for people on the verge of starvation. During their two-year ordeal, the Lord continually infused them with supernatural strength and stamina. At one point, when they were utterly exhausted and hungry, God gave them sudden and unusual strength to reach the safety of a refugee camp in Thailand. And, during those days, in spite of the many hardships and the constant threat of death, Huong and Samoeun led scores of people to Christ.
Now why had I come to the Killing Fields, and why am writing you of such horrendous things? Because God is transforming darkness into light. He is raising life out of death!
I saw profound contrast when I sat in a meeting room filled with 300 pastors and workers ready to bring the healing Truth of God's live to their wounded nation. Huong was leading and encouraging these committed men and women of God, and training in the effective use of the "JESUS" film.
The next day, I met privately with several "JESUS" film team workers. We asked how many had lost relatives during the "Killing Field" years. EVERY person raised a hand. I asked, "Would you hold up a finger on your hand for every loved one lost?" They then held up one finger, two, four, as many as seven--43 had been killed.
Then I asked, "Are you willing to forgive? Can you forgive?" With smiles on their faces and joy in their eyes, they replied, "Yes, of course. The Lord forgave us, we can forgive them." And some had great reason to be forgiven. Several were former Khmer Rouge soldiers whose units had participated in the killings.
That same day, in this nation that once suffered so much hopelessness, I joined in a most unusual celebration: a baptism of new believers--most of whom had come to Christ through the "JESUS" film.
FIVE BUSES were required to transport the new believers and their families to the Mekong River. Incredibly, 1,000 police and military lined the streets of our route through Phnom Penh as a motorcycle escort led us through the city. Each bus carried banners that proclaimed these were Christians on their way to be baptized! What a testimony! And yes, former Khmer Rouge soldiers were among them!
Join me in giving all honor, praise, and glory to our Lord.
And the excitement and wonder I felt did not end here. As I met with our Cambodian staff, they shared with me their vision to send out many more "JESUS" film teams, to train and equip them, to lead their whole nation to the light of the gospel. That's why I believe now is Cambodia's time. The doors are now open for the gospel to reach millions for Christ.
This freedom is not just in Cambodia. In the past several months, I have visited other countries in Asia. The responsiveness to the gospel that is being reported is thrilling! It is growing. With one voice, Christian leaders are telling me that the Holy Spirit is being poured out as never before, that people are ready to hear and receive the gospel. They told me, "all we need do is to tell them."
That is why I am writing to both encourage and challenge you.
First, I want to encourage you to make a commitment to pray for the "JESUS" film teams in Cambodia, and throughout all of Asia. Pray for their protection, for boldness, and that they will rely on the Holy Spirit to do the work.
Then, I would like to challenge you to consider giving financially to help send out more "JESUS" film teams. Even though over two billion people worldwide have now seen "JESUS" there are still four billion yet to be reached. We have immediate requests for 185 new teams, totaling $1,850,000. In addition, funds are needed for new projection equipment, 16mm copies of "JESUS" and videocassettes.
We have found, on average, that for every dollar you invest, one person could indicate a decision for Christ. This means that if you can send $50 to help send and equip a team, you could have a part in leading 50 people to Christ.
But this month, your gift can do much more.
That's because several generous donors who are convinced that we must all work together toward the fulfillment of the Great Commission have stepped forward and offered a "challenge grant." For every gift you send, your gift will be doubled--matched by a gift of equal amount.
Thus your gift of $50 will become $100, helping to lead up to 100 people to Christ. Your gift of $100 will become $200 and help introduce 200 to the Savior...$500 will become $1,000 and $1,000 will become $2,000. This is an exciting way to multiply your giving! Would you also ask the Lord if He would have you help provide one 16mm film print with a gift of $1,250? Your gift would be matched and become $2,500, helping to provide two "JESUS" film prints!
I have one final story to tell you.
A Christian coal miner in Asia was mocked daily for his faith. Faithfully, he read his Bible, despite the taunts of his co-workers. One day there was little to eat, only bread. The miners divided the bread among themselves for everyone but him. Hungry and discouraged, he watched as they tossed the last loaf to a dog. As he turned to protest, the dog scampered out of the mine.
The Christian miner ran out of the tunnel after the dog. No sooner had he reached the outside, when he heard an explosion. The tunnel collapsed and every one of the workers was killed. Only he and the dog escaped.
What is the lesson for us? God cares about us! It is the same lesson that Huong and Samoeun learned in Cambodia. Even though we encounter obstacles, ridicule, and even darkness, God is faithful. If we trust our lives, our resources, to God, He will be faithful to us.
In the nation of the Killing Fields, God is honoring faithfulness with a spiritual harvest that is growing every day. And He will honor you for helping.
Let's partner together in this great effort! And, let's take advantage of this matching grant offer to multiply the impact of your financial gifts.
Let's help the "JESUS" film teams in Asia, and around the world, to bring the Good News to their nations so they, too, may be called "out of darkness into His marvelous light!"
God bless you for helping give every person on earth one chance to hear.
Until the whole world hears,
Paul Eshleman

PS. There is wonderful freedom right now in Cambodia, and a growing freedom in the surrounding nations of Southeast Asia. How long it will last? Only the Lord knows. Our part is to be faithful when the doors are so open. I believe that is why several generous donors have been moved to match your gift dollar-for-dollar. It is why I am praying that we will receive $900,000 by August 30, 1999, which will be matched and become $1,800,000. So if you can, send your gift today. Remember to pray daily for these teams! Thank you and God bless you.

| Dear friend in
Christ, August 20, 1999
"Lord, may the words I write bring honor to Your name. Let nothing that I share give credit to men or myself, but only to You." That is the prayer of my heart...that as you read what He alone is doing, you will give glory to His name. My prayer is also that, should He lead, you will respond by giving--so that millions more may find the deepest longings of their hearts satisfied, in Christ. Let's begin with an amazing report from a Muslim country, where we have been advertising through the newspaper how people can receive, by mail, a copy of the "JESUS" film. A man called and asked for a copy, but not through the mail. "Please, I ask you to bring it in person, tomorrow at 2:00 PM." A volunteer found the address and knocked on the door. A man in a flowing robe answered: a Muslim cleric. The volunteer apologized profusely, "I'm sorry to disturb you, I must have the wrong address." He was ready to leave when the Muslim sheik (or Mullah) asked, "Why are you here?" He answered, "Someone has ordered a videocassette, but I must have the wrong address." "What cassette is it?" Hesitantly, he answered, "It is the story of Jesus, the 'JESUS' film." "Well, you have the right house. I am the one who ordered it." As he received the tape and turned to walk back inside, the volunteer peered through the door. The room was filled with people. To a packed house of waiting friends, the cleric exclaimed, "Jesus has arrived, Jesus has arrived! We've go Him, we've got Him!" In southern Spain, an Arab man and his American wife (who had both come to Christ) were on their way to a major seaport where they would join long lines of Muslims waiting to board ferries bound for Northern Africa. They were 400 kilometers from home when they realized that they had no Christian materials to give his relatives. They were too far to return. So they were delighted when, at the port, volunteers offered them "gift packets" containing an Arabic New Testament, Christian literature, plus a videocassette of the "JESUS" film and the audio version, "The Story of Jesus." They asked if they could have several, which they eagerly took to their family. Some months later, we learned that his younger brother watched the film and came to Christ. This brother then went through basic follow up training for a year. He then joined others like him for several weeks of discipleship training (we call it New Life Training). There he learned how to share his faith with fellow Muslims. He has since led a number of others to Christ, some of whom have now begun to attend the same training! For the past few years an Egyptian has been mobilizing a team of Palestinian Christians to come and share their faith at one of the sea ports...Arabs reaching Arabs. Our job has been to give them the "JESUS" video and audiotapes of "The Story of Jesus" (many listen to these in their cars while they wait for ferryboats). In Summer, these Palestinians passed out thousands of tapes and led 115 people to Christ, almost all of whom were Muslim! Increasingly we're finding that Muslims have indeed watched the video or listened to the audiotape. They are filled with questions, because what they learn about Jesus is not at all what they have been taught. And when they pray to receive Christ, a wonderful transformation occurs. At one of the ports in Europe a woman asked Christ into her heart. Then, lifting her head and hands, she began to cry out, "My burdens have left, my burdens have left." And word is spreading of the film. We're seeing conservative Muslim men getting off buses at the ports and literally running (something Muslim men don't do) to get their own "JESUS" films and New Testaments. A Muslim woman in her conservative black dress, with only her eyes showing, was seen moving toward a discarded gift pack of the film and Christian literature. Looking carefully around her, she slipped it beneath her layers of clothing and walked away. In a partially Muslim African nation, 19 people were watching a broadcast of "JESUS" on a television, powered by a car battery. The battery died and they nearly panicked. They found another battery and finished the film. Afterward, almost everyone enrolled in a Bible study. Next, the group requested that a film team show the film in their neighborhood. After two days, 4,300 people had seen the film and 2,100 reportedly committed their lives to Christ. Isn't all this wonderful? God is moving. When people here the gospel, when they understand it in their own language, they respond. Because people are so open, especially Muslims, a number of strategies to show the film are now at work. That's why I am writing... ...On the average, for every dollar you invest, ten people can watch the "JESUS" film, and at least one person could respond to Christ. IN some places, the average is much higher.... ...Are people ready to respond if we can show them "JESUS"? Will they watch? I will answer that question with one last report: A few months ago I was in a communist nation in Southeast Asia at a very large church that was "officially allowed to operate. As the film was shown, the church was packed with nearly 2,000 people. All around the outside, at least 1,000 more were peering through the windows, sitting on the steps, even on the curbs, any place where they could hear or see just a glimpse of the story of the gospel. When they at last see and hear the gospel in their own language, people are praying to receive Christ, crying out, "My burdens are gone!" This then is the prayer of my heart...that you will give glory to His name, and that as you sense His promptings, you will respond to these opportunities so millions will find the deepest longings of their hearts satisfied...in Christ. "Lord Jesus, may our response to what You are doing bring honor to Your name. Let not one of us take credit to ourselves, but give all the glory only to You.
Thank you and God bless you.

The following is a message from Elvin L. Ridder,
U.S. Ministries
December 2, 1999 Dear Friend in Christ, Stand still and consider all the wondrous works of God! Job 37:14. (NKjV) This will be the last challenge letter I send to you--before the year 2000. Much is happening! Television networks are now producing special programming on the major events of the last 1,000 years that have impacted humanity. But the most important impact has been the great movement of the Holy Spirit during the last 100 years...and most especially, during our lifetime. However, what God has done in the last 20 years I find especially "wondrous." I am so gratified to think how our Lord has blessed the "JESUS" film to introduce millions to Himself. Since its release in 1979, the film has been translated into more than 570 languages! A new translation of "JESUS" is being completed every three days! And with each new day, more than 2 million see and hear the gospel in the language of their hearts. Research and reports indicate that "JESUS" has been seen by 3 billion people! That is, of course, a "shared wonder" because of the many partnering churches, denominations and organizations who have made this possible. And now, in a few weeks, a special worldwide telecast of "A Millennial Tribute to Jesus" will be broadcast in more than 120 countries. This special edition of the "JESUS" film includes tributes to Jesus on the 2000th anniversary of His birth by more than 50 world-recognized leaders and celebrities. We anticipate that this telecast will be viewed by an estimated 500 million people! WHAT AN AMAZING 20 YEARS THIS HAS BEEN! Thank you for being faithful in your gifts and prayers. Thank you for having been a part of making history! Recently, I looked over a number of the "wondrous works" of God that have stood out in my memory. I would like to briefly recap a few of them here. As you read, give thanks to God,--for He alone deserves the praise.
People have been instantly healed of blindness and crippled limbs as they believe Jesus to do for them what He did in the film. And millions have been transformed as they received Jesus as their Lord and Savior (BY FAR THE GREATEST MIRALCE OF ALL!). These new believers have been baptized, nurtured in their faith, and have joined local churches. Praise God for all that He has done! To Him be all the glory for His great wonders. As you read those accounts you may have noticed that so much has happened at 16mm film showings through film teams who penetrated remote areas with the "JESUS" film. However, there is still much to do and many millions who are yet to be reached by these traveling film teams. This leads to the point of this letter: we will soon enter a new millennium, when we will be concentrating on some of the most challenging mission fields of all. We must still penetrate closed countries--huge population groups where 16mm showings of "JESUS" are not possible and are, in fact, dangerous. To reach them with the message of the film, we must use videotape, audiotape and other methods. I think of places like Asia, and the largely unreached 10/40 window (which is substantially Muslim), as well as predominately Hindu India, where millions of people have yet to hear the gospel. To help reach them, God has raised up tens of thousands of Christians in these countries who are ready to partner with The JESUS Film Project, and with you--to be your arms and legs as you provide the means. Churches are purchasing VCRs and every night sending out their members to show the "JESUS" video in surrounding homes. In some other countries, VCRs are plentiful. There, volunteers personally deliver the "JESUS" video to people's homes, where they can safely watch on their own. For this new thrust in the year 2000, I believe God is leading us to provide a total number of tapes that, from a human perspective, is staggering. We need 2 million videos of "JESUS" alone for 10,000 itinerant evangelists who will gather in Amsterdam in July at Amsterdam 2000. We need an additional 1 million videos for partnerships and evangelistic thrusts into closed communist nations and in the Middle East. In total, $30 million will be required to supply 4 million videotapes. Each videotape, produced and delivered, costs $7.50, and can be seen by about 50 people. Will you join in this effort? Will you help provide six of these tapes of "JESUS" with a gift of $50, and help show "JESUS" to 300 people? Would you consider a gift of $500 to help 3,000 people see and hear the gospel, or $1,000 to help reach 6,000 people?... ...Yes, God IS AT WORK! It is obvious that His hand is on His Word, the Gospel of Luke, (on which the film is based). To help send out these video and audiocassettes is an opportunity to continue this work into areas where 16mm cannot go. Thank you for prayerfully considering how you can help. Will you again enable His gospel to go further, and into the hands of people who have never heard? Will you have a part in reaching into urban areas, communist nations and Muslim countries where 16mm film teams cannot work? Will you help people who have never once heard the name of Jesus to see and understand? Thank you for your partnership in our Lord's work. Together, let us praise God for the great things He as done--and believe Him for greater miracles in the difficult places.
Until the whole world hears, Paul Eshleman Director The JESUS Film Project...
