Biographical Information
Hi my name is Dan Shuman, but my friends all call me Shag. I've had the nickname since junior high. I was born April 10, 1974 in Boston, MA. I grew up in a small town called Marblehead, MA. I am living at home with my parents right now while I save up some money and plan my next adventure. My house is the same house that My Dad grew up in.

Personal Interests
I have quite a few interests but bicycles and human powered vehicles are my biggest interests. I also like computers and playing my didgeridoo. And of course I can't forget one of my favorite social sports Hacky Sak. I do like riding my bicycles but I prefer repairing other people's bicycles and I am going to open my own shop someday in the near future.
The summer before 8th grade I went to a camp called the Biking Expedition, located in Henniker, NH, and it was there where I found something I wanted to do for my career. I wanted to ride, fix, and design bikes. That summer I signed up on a ride around Prince Edward Island. The following summer I rode from Seattle, WA down the coast through Oregon to San Francisco, CA. Both tours were excellent and I learned leadership and basic mechanical skills. The summer after my freshman year of high school I spent a moth on an Outward Bound program and then came home and started an apprenticeship with "The Bike Doctor." He operated a mobile bike repair service in my town and started paying me after my first week.
The next summer I got an apprenticeship with Marblehead Cycle located on 25 Bessom Street in my hometown, and I worked several hours a week for about 2.5 months without pay. Then, when business picked up, in the spring I worked part time and then would work full time in the summer, with pay of course. I worked on and off there for many years, sometimes I would leave, but if I ever came back and needed work Chris Finn, the owner and my boss would give me work; even if he didn't need any help at the time. I now manage his second location called Salem Cycle, which is located at 316 Derby Street in Salem, MA.
In the summer of 1996 I attended the
United Bicycle Institute, in Ashland, Oregon. Before going to this "school" I already had several years experience at a couple local bike shops. Well I finished both classes, a total of 3 weeks, and I am now a Certified bicycle mechanic. I have always enjoyed fixing whatever I could find whether it was broken or not and bicycles change so frequently I never get tired of them.
Last summer I rode my bike across part of the country with a friend of mine, Dave Leo
. The ride was originally for the fun of it, but we then decided to have a cause. So we decided to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis, a disease my father has. We raised almost $4000 for National MS Society, we were also received product donations from the following companies; Marblehead and Salem Cycles, Bell Sports, Blackburn, Vista Lite, Giro, Cannondale, Pedro's, Kryptonite, Oakley, Front Street Coffeehouse, City Sports, and Xtreme Silkscreen. Due to some unexpected problems we were not able to continue the ride. We did, however, ride across the state of Oregon. We started at Crater Lake and rode up the state to Baker City. It was about 700 miles and one hell of a ride and a great adventure and it took us about two weeks. I hope to finish it someday.
This fall I am planning a road trip across the country with my good friend Matt Natti. I don't know when we will finish or where we will end. I plan to find a place to open my own bike shop somewhere West of the Rockies.
Well the trip across the country was awesome and I am working on getting my journal with pictures from the trip online. I am working on getting a scanner and editing my journal for all to see. When I get the scanner I will insert picture where appropriate and post a link to story of our great adventure.
