VoC Ziplink Message BoardTuesday, September 15, 1998Looks like my web pages are beginning to shape up. Now that I've cleaned up my room, I can spend more time on my computer fixing up these pages. I've added two new sections: Chau's Boston Page and Chau's Web Playground. Since my bookmark/favorites list overfloweth, expect a whole bunch of links to appear in one big pile soon. I can feel the momentum building... |

Finally, I'm able to change the default web page to index.html. What a nuisance! At first, the Microsoft's FrontPage support pages told me to modify some mystery srm.cnf file, but I couldn't find it on my hard drive after spending so many fruitless moments. It turns out that the instructions Microsoft provided applied to the FrontPage Personal Web Server instead of the slightly different Microsoft PWS, which is the one installed on my machine and doesn't have the srm.cnf file. After wading through the Web and newsgroups for answers, I finally got the correct instructions from a non-Microsoft FrontPage FAQ site, http://www.sitecrafters.com/support/fp98/index.htm. I tell ya', FrontPage 98 is not easy to begin with. Microsoft certainly makes simple changes hard to do. Maybe it's because Micro$oft hopes the inexperienced and impatient ones give up trying and naively slip into lock-step with Micro$oft's beat. Thank goodness we computer people are often very willing to share our knowledge to save everyone else a lot of trouble and to help all of us resist Micro$oft's relentless influence, all for the common good.
Just acquired Microsoft FrontPage 98 last Wednesday. Some of the features of the software are a bit quirky because Microsoft is trying to control the Web by forcing us web developers to adopt their ways. For example, Microsoft wants us to use default.htm instead of index.html, and they're trying to coax us into using FrontPage server extensions, which run on (surprise, surprise) Microsoft web servers and not all UNIX servers. I don't like Micro$oft's aggressive behavior toward the Internet, but FrontPage 98 is still top-notch in web management and development. So for the next several weeks, I'll be figuring out how to get FrontPage to work for my web pages, as well as skirting around Micro$oft diabolical plans of world domination.
Okay! That's it! I'm starting this damn home page all over again! I haven't touched it since last February, and it's about time I've given it new life. I don't care how it looks like now. As long as I have something up. That's all that matters...
