Thomas Knatt graduated from MIT in 1961 with a dual major in Science and the Humanities, and began making guitars in 1964. He studied instrument making and acoustics with David Rubio, Karl Roy of the Mittenwald violinmaking school, and Dr. Carleen Hutchins. He has built more than 100 instruments, primarily classical and flamenco guitars and published papers in the Catgut Acoustical Society Journal, Guitar and Lute, and Guitarmaker. Over 75 lutherie students have made guitars in his classes and many of those guitars are played professionally.
