Repair Hints and Kits

Tom's shop specializes in education and solving problems. He makes unique instruments, repairs difficult breaks, and teaches others how to do these things. This space will change as he presents additional topics.

Do you have a guitar or violin that needs repair? Perhaps he can give you a hint about what to do. Just ask!

Hint: Buzzing saddle

A common source of buzzing on a string at the saddle is to have the top of the saddle too flat. New guitars should have the ride point of the strings over the saddle at the front if the bridge intonation, is set correctly. The saddle should not be flat but should slope downward toward the tie piece or pins. If not, the bottom of the bass strings will rattle against the saddle bone in a very unpleasant manner.
