BEING READY FOR BAPTISM?
How do you know when your young child is ready for baptism? I guess it really depends on the child. But I would like to share why I felt that my son was ready for baptism at such a young age.
Timmy will be 10 yrs old in a couple weeks ( October 8th, 2001).... back nearly a year ago,
Timmy decided that he would like to be baptized. In our church, we
baptize when a person is old enough to make the decision themselves.
As babies, we dedicate them to bring them up loving Jesus, and teaching
them the word of God. We also have bible studies/baptismal classes for
those wishing to be baptized. When Timmy decided to be baptized, his
older brother decided to join the baptismal class as well. Timmy loved
learning all he could, and sucked up everything... but because of his autism, and his disability he needed a helper
next to him, to write his answers on paper, and he needed extra time
answering questions out loud, and reading from the bible... but he loved
the class, and he finished the class with the other 2 older children
whom where also wanting to get baptized.
Timmy is such a unique little boy. Part of which is because he is autistic, and has unique special needs. Over the years, he has had a very close personal relationship with his friend Jesus. I remember, when he was questioning the existance of God, and asking God, if You are real, make my hand go through this wall, and his hand did not go through the wall... so he figured God was not real... I felt that was so precious, and it was a sign he was seeking real answers to things. We explained that God does not work like this. He will not do these things, but there are ways to know that God is real... and we showed him examples how God has intervened in our lives, and how he loves us and cares for us. As Timmy has grown, his relationship with Jesus has been very real. I remember, when Timmy went to public school for a short time. He asked all the childen if they knew Jesus, and he told them about Him. He would come home and tell me whom loved Jesus in his class, and he would be so excited. His teacher loved Jesus too. He was teaching those who did not know Jesus, so that they could learn too. He would bring his bible to school with him every day, and he would read the 23rd psalm as often as he could. Timmy has a tender soul. Timmy loves to sing worship songs, songs from church, and any song that uplifted Jesus's name. He loves to pray, and his prayers are always so apropriate, and come from his heart. Timmy tries to live what he believes. Sometimes, I dont understand why a little boy like Timmy, whom loves Jesus with all his heart, could have the problems he does... but I do know this... this little boy belongs to Jesus. I am so happy for Timmy... he has been waiting so patiently for his turn for baptism...
